Short translation of opening of Jojo part 3 novel.
砂漠発地獄行　(“jikgoku” here is glossed as “hell city”. I am not sure what this really means: “Towards the Hell City Arising from the Desert”? Or, “From the Desert, Towards the Hell City?”)

The straight horizon neatly divided the halves of earth and sky. [まっすぐな地平線が、大地と空ときっちり二等分していた.] The extremely clear sky was more near to black than blue. In contrast to this, the sand thickly covering the earth was glaringly white, reflecting the tropical sun.

Other than this, nothing could be seen. Not mountains, rivers, oases, shrubbery, or starved camels, not even the traces of desert foxes. Of course, traces of civilization and such were nowhere to be found. Even the scent of life　was not to be seen. The endlessly spreading smooth sea of sand, and the clear blue-black sky…these were the whole of the desert. Wild, and changelessly extending. A dazzling nothingness for as far as one could see.

Thus, the group of five men and one dog could be thought of as something like a trace in the desert. The temperature was perhaps more than fifty degrees centigrade. Their heated bodies were as heavy as lead. Their eyes were burned by the dazzling sun reflected on the pure white sand. Their parched lips were unpleasantly cracked, their tongues, as rigid as beef jerky, tasted unpleasant in their mouths. [terrible translation. It's 何ともいえないイヤな味を口中から感じとっている。]

Here, nature was not kind to humans. It did not benevolently welcome them. In this place, it clearly harbored an enmity towards them. If this were not so, they would not receive such disfavor.
